TECHNOLOGY FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS:
Akapulco (Senna alata) is a woody bush found throughout the Philippines. Traditionally, the leaves have been used to treat fungal infections, from which it got its common name “ringworm bush.” The leaves are traditionally pounded, the juice extracted and applied directly onto affected skin. Chrysophanic acid has been isolated as one of the active components of Akapulco lotion. Its use has been advocated by the Philippine Department of Health, under the Sampung Halamang Gamot – Ten Medicinal Plants. Numerous studies, both in vitro and clinical trials, have shown its antifungal properties against dermatophytes and superficial yeast infections.
Akapulco 50% lotion has been clinically tested by the National Integrated Research Program on Medicinal Plants (NIRPROMP) to be safe and effective in treating Pityriasis (Tinea) versicolor or fungal skin infections. The lotion contains 2.5g of Akapulco leaves per 5 mL.
Akapulco lotion is included in the Philippine National Formulary and thus may be purchased by both Government and private hospitals

MARKET TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Fungal skin infections are very common in the Philippines especially that we are a tropical country. Heat and humidity contribute to the growth of fungus. Thus, akapulco being a natural and Philippine made product would rapidly gain wide acceptance and be used even as an over-the counter treatment or be prescribed by physicians.
Akapulco is an affordable, herbal medicine to treat superficial fungal skin infections. It was developed by Filipino researchers from Filipino plants to boost the Philippine Pharmaceutical Industry, provide new cash crops for farmers and offer Filipinos medical and financial benefits.
Philippine Patent has been obtained. We are in need of pharmaceutical companies willing to produce, manufacture and distribute the product in the Philippine market.
